Sparkler Effect

by jan17, Apr 20, 2008 03:15PM
I had macular hole surgery 10 weeks ago, the hole is closed but I am left with a dark circle in my central vision which sometimes swirls around. I have a sparkler effect from the outside left eye which moves to the middle. This is not always present but I am curious to what would be causing this. I have had my eye seen by the Dr. but he states my eye has healed fine. What would cause this??

The black spot is due to the damage from the macular hole.  Although the hole can be made smaller and flat, the central area of the original hole will never be the same, so often the central blind spot can be made smaller, but the visual acuity may sometimes not get much better than 20/80 or 20/100 although sometimes better.  Regarding the sparkles, probably something to do with macular problems or possible vitreous traction or vitreous or retinal detachment.  Be sure to tell your surgeon.  He may need to see you again to evaluate.

Two Questions:
1. Is there research on improving the procedure for macular holes and if the surgery is unsuccessful, hole closed but no improvement of vision?
2. Is there any correlation between use of prescribed medications, vitamins, etc. and macular holes if a person has a disease of the mast cells?
