Strabismus surgery

by nydanny, Sep 14, 2007 08:08PM
hey guys. i'm a 19 year old college student. i have strabismus and slight amblyopia. my right eye has a little bit of hypertropia (if measured with a ruler, it would be about a millimeter or a hair less) and my left eye has slight esotropia when i'm tired (told by my doctor). i've gone through vision therapy for a year and currently wearing prism glasses. i'm thinking about strabismus surgery for alignment after i graduate. has anyone near my age done this? what are the results? are you happy? the main reason i want the surgery is because i don't want to wear the glasses and i'm constantly feeling depressed (not wanting to socialize, do anything, etc).

Hello nydanny   I suggest you see a ophthalmologist that specializes in strabismus (eye alignment disorders) usually the are called Pediatric ophthalmologists since most strabismus is in childhood but most also do adult strabismus. Only an evaluation by this type of Eye MD can tell you whether surgery will help. I suggest you do it soon. Most strabismus specialists DON'T belive in visual therapy--it's expensive and not proven by evidence based medicine. It is a profit center for non-physician, limited scope eye care providers (optometrists-they have OD after their name).
