Surges of light with eyes closed

by brittanyblue, Jan 17, 2008 07:37PM
This may sound very strange.
Not DAILY, but regularly I experience a strange flash of light, which actually feels like a surge of electricity.  I will be laying down for bed at night, almost asleep when i will see a flash of light and i feel a strange (like i said, almost like an electrical surge) kind of vibration, but only in my head, it doesnt travel the rest of my body.

It's very weird and it scares me everytime.  It doesnt hurt so much as shock me intensely.  I'm very curious to see what might be causing this.

I've also experienced a flash of light like electricity with my eyes closed just as I'm falling asleep. It's only happened twice in the last 2 weeks. And last week there were 2 times where I felt a vibration: it woke me up and I thought my heart was racing, but I checked my pulse and it was normal. It doesn't hurt at all but it does scare me.

Hi,
II believe you are both experiencing a visual sleep start.

Sleep Starts
Most people have experienced the common "motor" sleep start — a sudden, often violent, jerk of the entire body that occurs upon falling asleep. Other forms of sleep starts also occur just as sleep begins. A "visual" sleep start is a sensation of blinding light coming from inside the eyes or head. An "auditory" sleep start is a loud snapping noise that seems to come from inside the head. Such occurrences can be frightening, but are harmless.
