Symphony or monofocal set for intermidiate ?

Hi all,

I am 46, male from India, mostly work with computers. I do drive for an hour each day and night. I have a right eye with matured cataract and left eye nescant cataract..I am planning to ignore left eye problem hoping, it will not progress much. My both eyes have diopters, -1.5 and +1.5 with no astigmatism. Ten years ago I had laser surgery for retina detachment due to impact on head. There are no other issues with eyes.

My three questions are:

A) Can I choose a symphony IOL for my right eye to cover near and intermediate distance instead of usual far and intermediate ? Is it common ?.. If I did that, what would be the diopter no. for far distance for that eye ?

B)  If I choose monofocal for right eye (ignoring left eye) to set for intermediate distance instead of usual far distance, then I guess I would need lenses for near and distance vision. What would those diopters would be ?

C) Is Symphony approved in US ?

A). You can choose to get the Symfony set for intermediate and near, that is monovision. It merely may require less of a difference with the Symfony than a monofocal.

In terms of what the "diopter no. for far distance for that eye" would be, it depends on what range of distances you'd wish to see clearly. The diopters for a focal point is -(100/distance_in_centimeters), so to focus clearly at 2 meters you'd get a -(100/200) = -0.5D set lens, and the average results with the Symfony suggest then that 2.5D in from that you'd still have 20/40 vision, i.e. at -3D which would be 33.3 cm.  Note: the studies only indicate average results, each person's eyes are different, some do better and some worse (though that is true with monofocals as well as the Symfony and any other lens).

B) It depends on where you set that eye, if its set for -0.5D then you'd need a +0.5D to get the best distance vision (though you do see a bit further out from the best focal point, so your distance vision might be fairly decent even without correction if you were lucky).  What you'd need for near correction depends on how near you'd wish to see, and wish monofocal lens you got (they aren't all created equal).

It also if your other eye isn't operated on, it depends on how its vision is what sort of correction you'll need.

C). The Symfony isn't approved in the US yet, though I've heard some claim they expect it to be within the next 6 months, but I'm not sure how well anyone can really guess how long it will take the FDA to approve something. Since you are in India, I'm not sure why that matters. The positive study results all suggest it will be approved. The FDA is notoriously slow about approving new medical devices, and it can be a costly process, so some companies now don't even bother trying to get FDA approval to market in the US even if they have a good product.

This topic has been discussed at length in many discussion threads. You will not have to look back far to find them. Also you can use the search feature on this page. Note especially the posts by Software Developer who has had the surgery.
