Symptoms of Lattice degeneration

Symptoms of Lattice degeneration

Posted by Colette Hawkins on July 24, 1999 at 13:41:00
About 5 years ago my opthamologist told me I had lattice degeneration in my left eye.  It concerned me because my uncle battled the disease for several years and his retina did detatch. I am nearsighted, -2.50 sph OD & -2.50 sph OS. Two years ago my doctor checked me again and said I was OK because I had no "holes".  Yesterday I noticed that it seems like I have "gaps" in the vision in my left eye.  There are two blobs of grey interrupting my sight.  My doctor said to watch out for floaters and flashes, but what is this? It is very distracting.
Please let me know what your opinion is and I thank you for your time and consideration.
                           Sincerely,
                                  Colette

I am not sure what to make of your "gaps" in vision without examining you.  If they are fixed black areas, this could be associated with a retinal problem.  Other signs of a retinal detachment are increased floaters or flashing lights.  Since you are at a higher risk for retinal problems given your family history and lattice degeneration, I think you should have your retinas reexamined by your ophthalmologist.
