Toric IOL and multifocal contact lenses

Toric IOL and multifocal contact lenses

Week ago had Alcon toric IOL( 17.0D)  placed in non donimate right eye.  Realize that it has healing yet to go, but concerned about near sight being more effected than I had expected.  Nearrly unable to read headlines in the newspaper.  Wondering about the possibility of continuing the use of multifocal RGP contacts after the healing is complete to increase near vision.  At this point I would need reading glasses for many activities of daily life.  Looking at 2.0 to 2.5 in readers.  Likely to wait for the second, lesser contact removal until this decision is made as I seem to do OK with RGP mulit in left eye.  Any help would be appreciated

It is far too early in your convalescence to start planning for contingencies that may not eventuate.  Express you concerns and questions to your surgeon next visit.

You can definitely wear a multifocal contact to improve your near/intermediate vision once your eye has healed.  BTW, I've read that the Alcon toric IOL does an excellent job of eliminating astigmatism.

Thanks.  This is an issue for me as I have not depended on glasses in the past.  I realize it is "early is convalescence"  but they are my eyes and my responsibility to care for.  The contingencies need to be thought out and planned for it they are to remain possibilities.  I do not want to go ahead with the second if this is the near sight I am to be left with. Anyone out there who is post surgery and wearing contacts to correct for lack of near vision?   I am not a candidiate for monovision as I have had several strabismis surgeries.

I've worn Triton translating soft bifocal contacts by Gelflex post-cataract surgery.  They gave me sharper vision than the other soft multifocal options. But if you can tolerate RGP multifocals, they might be your best bet.  (If your healing goes smoothly, you should be able to wear a contact in your right eye very soon.)

I have been following your responses to Loubud and have appreciated the kindness you demonstrate.  Your comments have also been helpful to me.  At this time I have decided to delay the second cataract removal and will focus on finding a bifocal contact that will work for me.  My eyes continue to be "staright" which is wonderful.  I also find that I have my own kind of monvision as my left eyes sees very well without a contact for near vision.  The vision in the right eye continues to improve.  I say easy does it.  No rush for the second surgery.  Thanks again for your info regarding Triton.  Sounds wonderful.
