Trapezoid distortion in lined bifocals

I had new lined bifocals made and when I went to pick them up, I noticed that square or rectangular objects were distorted and did not have 90 degrees angles at the corners.  They were shaped like a trapeziod - longer across the top, slanted inward from top to bottom on both sides and narrower at the bottom.  So the doctor took alot of new measurements with respect to the height of the bifocal from the bottom of the frames, distance between pupils, center of eyeglass frame to each pupil, etc. and had them remade, but no improvement was noticed. Additional facts:  The shape of objects are "correct" looking through the distance portion of the lens, but not through the bifocal.  And, if I cover each eye independently, the shape of the objects are "correct".  it is only when I look through the bifocal with both eyes are the same time that the distortion occurs.  The doctor is at a loss to explain it and just wants me to wear them for awhile, but I build furniture as a hobby and can't afford for cuts that are exactly 90 degrees to look distorted.

Hello,
This is a classical symptom for bifocal and progressive lens wearers. It is usually due to the changing focal length along the distance. Usually this discomfort wears off with habit of wearing the new lenses over about 3 weeks time. It is not that the shape will be rectified but your tollerance for the distortion will be much better. It will not affect your vision or visual acuity. This is very often seen in progressive lens wearers and hardly seen in bifocal wearers.

Is this a bifocal with a line or a progressive?  If the latter, try a conventional bifocal.
