UPDATE FROM DAD *** WITH DIAGNOSIS ***

by MTMD, Apr 09, 2008 11:16AM
My ORIGINAL POST BELOW (closed for some reason): 5 1/2 year old seeing "dots" or "sparkles" (colors)
Hello,
I am very concerned. :( MY daughter (5 1/2) has just stated complaining of seeing tiny tiny "dots" or "sparkles". They are around objects and people, not in front of them. She states they are different colors, but the colors are in patches, grouped together. She states she has been seeing them since K4 (last year). I have asked her to draw pictures of what she sees and she is very consistent.  The ophthalmologist says her eyes are fine. He suggested (if this continues) she see a pediatric ophthalmologist. I have made an appointment to see our pediatrician on Monday. I am going to take the drawings and the objects I had her draw. I would be HAPPY to e-mail you a scan of the pictures she drew, and a picture of the object she was looking at. This is really scaring me.
Thank you so much!!!!
Roy

UPDATE FROM DAD  *** WITH DIAGNOSIS *** : “Temporal Lobe Seizures, Bilateral’. Completed EEG yesterday with pediatric neurologist at Sacred Heart confirming diagnosis. They had us bring her in sleep deprived. As predicted the small seizures are more frequent when she is tired and / or stressed.  Medication: started daughter on KEPPRA twice a day. We will do follow-up EEG in 3 months to see if seizures are suppressed. Doctor feels she will likely out grow this in 2 years or so. Her small seizures last only for a matter of a second or two, but are frequent. There is no jerking or interruption of  her motor skills. There is really no sign of the seizures at all. This does not effect her learning. She is in K5, (first grade next year). She is currently taking  Spanish, taking dance, reading, doing math. It seems to only effect her vision. The doctor said she might show symptoms of “zoning out” where she simple does not respond to you during those few seconds. As a parent this might  come across as her ignoring me for a few seconds when I am asking her to do something. I have not noticed this problem (other than when she is watching “Sponge Bob”). Hope this helps!! I know I feel better to have an answer.  PS: The MRI was clear, no problems.

My 6 year old started experiencing seeing spots and dots this summer.  When it is particularly bad for him he holds his hands in front of his eyes.  This is really scary to us as parents.  Our pediatrician sent us to an opthamologist and his eyes were normal.
He had an MRI which was normal.  He goes to see a neuro opthamologist in September.
If anyone else has any other information on this condition please post.
