I went to Wills Eye hospital/Institute for a 2nd opinion and you get a resident.  There was a Dr. on staff.  Then when you schedule cataract surgery they didn't even schedule a consultation with the eye surgeon (who comes in from the Philadelphia suburbs anyway).  When I inquired about this, they schedule a consult with another resident.

So, since my own Dr. was trained at Wills Eye and occasionally performs surgery at Wills Eye, I decided to go to him for the cataract surgery.

This experience showed me that you don't always get personal service at a large teaching institution.

What are the strength of the university eye programs? Research? I would not want my eyes to be looked at by a bunch of trainees. I recalled years ago having my eye checked and a bunch of doctors hanging around chit-chatting with each other. Never set foot there again. I have since by chance been under the care of one amazing doctor at a midsize practice.

I think that's a very strong list. For number 10 I would have put University of Iowa or Washinging University in St. Louis.

(I trained at Emory)

This is just one list, others have their own idea. Most all university medical eye programs are strong
