Vaseline Vision Dysphotopsia

I wanted to bring this article to the attention of all the people with multifocal intraocular lens (IOLs) that have posted here.

Some of you have had difficulty in describing what your vision is like. I'm quoting an article that Appears in EyeWorld December 2007 Supplement "Customizing cataract and corneal refractive surgery".  This is an article "Vaseline vision dysphotopsia" by Frank A Bucci Jr MD (p16).

These are how patients with VVD describe their vision after Restore and ReZoom IOLs: shadowy vision, filmy vision, like vasoline smeared on my eye, waxy vision, hologram vision, 3-D vision, hazy vision and dirty lens vision.

In this small study 5% of patients with ReStor IOLs had VVD 3% of the IOLs had to be removed on the average of 9 months after the surgery.

I am interested in where you are at with your class action lawsuit. I had Restor implanted in my left eye on july 23rd. You can read my previous posts. Bottom line is the vision is only 20/50 and blury. Four other eye doctors (not my surgeon)have told me that my right eye cataract is not very bad. Therefore I am very unlikely to have the right eye done which has left me with trying to fix the Restor eye but no way to get glasses to have both eyes work together. I have developed an ulcer on my cornea from wearing a contact on my right eye which is the only one I can still see clearly with. I am considering explanting the Restor eye at this point.

Dr. Mike Kutryb and I have done a research paper on ReZoom based on responses on these two eye forums. It has been peer reviewed and will be published in the Jan/Feb 09 issue of MISSOURI MEDICINE medical journal. When its published I will put a copy of it on this website so all can read.

Bottom line: ReZoom has more complaints and problems than Crystalens and ReStor and many more problems than a high quality monofocal IOL.

It is my personal opinion that surgeons should either not use this IOL, it should be removed for the market OR that the informed consent given by surgeons and contained in the IOL information should be much more forceful in describing the dysphotopsia.'

Your best bet at this point would be to get second (third) opinions from cataract surgeons who are very experienced with ReStor.  It's possible that something could be done to improve your vision.  If not, you need to know what your options are.

I had cataract surgery on my left eye in April and two weeks later on my right eye. During th pre op exam a question came up from the tech reguarding the type of lens that was going to implanted. I was assured by the surgeon that the Restor multifocal was the one to use. Today I cannot see close vision clearly out of either eye but can go into sunlight and see clearly, Everything seems very hazy and I cannot read inside expect directly under light and then only larger print. I am on my second pair of glasses to help sharpen close vision and still no results.  Even with Cataracts I could see better before surgery. Is there any answers as to why this has happened?
