Vitrase

Are you familiar with this drug that has been approved for use in Mexico?  Supposedly, it is designed to clear up blood leakage in the vitreous caused by diabetes, et al and is close to being approved in the US.  My question is, could this also be used to clear up other floaters, strands, or specks that can commonly occur?
  Thanks.

Research is underway to develop medications which dissolve the vitreous jelly.  This can reduce the need for surgical removal of the vitreous or if necessary aid in the surgery.  As you mentioned, the main use for this will be in patients with vitreous hemorrhage.  As with any procedure, there are some associated risks and the risks must outway the benefits.  I do not know of any plans to use this for the treatment of vitreous floaters at this time.  Vitreous floaters are not harmful to the eye, they are just annoying.
Sincerely,
