Vitrectomy

by chalula, Jan 26, 2008 11:36AM
After having a vitrectomy for a macular pucker, i have been told that I will develop  a cataract in the operated eye soon after and the other eye should not be affected. My question is since steroids are used and they are systemic how come the other eye is not affected.

Cataract development is related to the lens' exposure to oxygen during surgery, not to the use of steroid eye drops.  It's my understanding that it would require several months of steroid use before there would be a danger of cataract development.
