What is really the problem

Since August of this year I have had trouble with my eye.  I was prescribed prednisone and have been on it since August.  When my eye clears up they lower the dosage, then my eye gets red again.  The doctors say its scleritis. Is this normal and how long can I continue taking this medication ?

Dear raintree,

Scleritis is a serious eye condition.  You do not mention whether you have any other associated systemic conditions but should definitely get checked.  Common diseases associate with scleritis include rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa, Wegener’s granulomatosis, herpes zoster virus, gout and syphilis  These medications may need to be used for a long time and the primary disease managed.
