Wierd Eye Symptom

Hi,

I posted a few months back.

On Thursday night my vision went funny for about 2 hours.  Right eye had flickering and loss of peripheral vision.  I could still see in central vision without movement, but difficulty reading etc. due to the movement.

Hard to explain - the movement flickering was almost like water running down/splashing against glass.  Right eye mostly affected, but if I covered the right eye then could still see/feel the movement.  Was left with a headache around right eye... still have it on and off 2 days later.  This is the second time this has happened this year..

Retina was checked a few months ago, all was ok.  Visual field mapping about 9 months ago was ok.

What could this be?  I am kind of reluctant to go back to see Dr. as so far every time I've seen someone they've said everything looks fine.

Thank you.

If you've seen an ophthalmologist then you need to see a neurologist. While statistically, especially if you're young, it likely is an ophthalmic migraine these symptomes can be due to serious disease of the heart, brain, and blood vessels.

Hi again.

Have been researching tonight.  It seems that I am describing a possible occular migraine, which I understand is nothing to be concerned about?

Have had some other sensory  - burning/ neurological symptoms in past year, but these seem to have mostly settled down now and are not significantly bothering me now.  I presume this would not be related.

Thank you again.

Get a physical with a reputable doc who should check you for cardio-vascular problems as well as sensitivity to aspartame (a.k.a. "nutrasweet").  These are migranes (migraines) -- it's important to determine what is causing them.  In my own case, I get these exact type of migrane (migraine) if I ingest aspartame.  And, the only other time I had them was as a teenager (before aspartame even existed).  That turned out to be cardio-vascular caused by a previously undetected atrial-septal defect.  My general practicioner picked it up because he heard a "new" heart murmur when he examined me to determine the cause of the migranes (migraines).  Further workup by a cardiologist revealed by "shunting" of blood between upper chambers of the heart from an atrial-septal defect (ASD) (previously undetected).  This is a birth defect and was repaired by an internal patch.  And, no more migranes (migraines), except when I ingest aspartane.

Good luck.

Hi,

I had a 3-D echo last year when I was tested with high cardiac enzymes:  CK-MB very elevated.  But all checked out ok, and also with more sensitive cardiac enzyme tests.

I am 37 and fairly fit - exercising > 1 hr most days.  Also have history of thyroid failure for past 8 years (treated with Nth combined with T4) and pituitary microadenoma (about 5 mm) that was stable as of last MRI check a year ago.

Will see neuroopthamologist this week to check things out again....

Thank you.
