Aching in and around the eye can be difficult to diagnose because there may be no signs the doctor can see. The history can be the only aid to diagnosis. Pain in an eye can come from high eye pressure or inflammation but these are things that the doctor can usually find without difficulty. Sinus congestion can cause pain around the eyes. Many times this is worse in the morning upon awakening. "Eye strain" is aching in and around the eyes caused by the internal focusing muscle (ciliary muscle) overworking. If you are farsighted or over 40 and if your vision is not adequately corrected, you will have aching when doing close work. Sometimes aching can be referred pain from the neck area. The greater occipital nerves looping over the back of the skull can be irritated by muscle tension or arthritis in the neck. The pain radiates to the frontal area. This can be helped by anti-inflammatory meds such as ibuprofen or heat placed on the neck.
