astigmatism and myopia

by mayi_c, Oct 27, 2008 07:35PM
My kid is 5 year old and has been diagnosed with astigmatism and myopia..His power is 0.50 for left eye and 0.00 on right eye.. And his cylinder and axis is written as 1.75 and 2.00 / 175 and 180 (axis)..
What does this mean? and can this problem correct by itself..or does he need to put glasses for the rest of the life..
We are so depressed after hearing about the problem.. Any opinions welcome..
Thanks

He is not myopic, just has astigmatism or an aspheric cornea.

I suggest you take him to a pediatric ophthalmologist especially if you have been seeeing an optometrist. Studies show that optoms prescribes glasses about 40% more often than ophthalmologists. So there are many children and adults in glasses they don't really need.

Find an Eye MD near you at www.aao.org

Sometimes astigmatism gets worse as a child gets older and sometimes better.
