behind eye aching

I am on day 7 of aching behind my eyes, I think in the upper socket areas.  It comes and goes, usually more in the evening.  I kept thinking I was getting a headache, but it never turns into one.  Tylenol and Advil don't seem to help.  I don't have any other symptoms, no sinus congestion, fever etc.  For about a week prior to this I felt ill with  a strange feeling of carsickness, like I might be coming down with the achey (achy) flu, but never did.  I took lots of ibuprofen and tylenol all during that week.  I don't know if this is related or not.  By the end of the day I just want to close my eyes.  The ache doesn't change if I move my eyes around.  Last night I woke up in the middle of the night and it was back. Usually sleeping provides relief, but not last night. I have not noticed any change in my vision whatsoever.

I have tried to search online for possibilities.  Could this be optic neuritis, even without visual changes?

At what point should I see my family doctor or a specialist?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I thought I would wait this out, but it doesn't seem to be going away.
Thank you

You are at the point that you need to see an ophthalmologist (Eye MD) and your family physician. Optic neuritis would not be a likely cause. It the problem is not related to your eyes then sinus disease would likely be the most common cause.
