bright, pulsating lines in vision

For four or five years, I have periodically experienced a curved, jagged-edged pulsating line in my vision.  The jagged areas are very geometric, and there is color (usually bright pink or purple) that alternates with dark (maybe black) and white.  (it's a very pretty display, but very disconcerting).  It does not occur on a regular basis, but I have had it occur multiple times (probably more than 20, but less than 40 times).  At the same time, I have an area in my field of vision that goes blank - I cannot see anything within a small area.  I do not notice any pain associated with the vision difficulty.  I am not aware of it being tied to a particular incident (like extra stress).
