broken blood vessal

my wife had cateract surgery in Nov. of last yr, followed by an iratation that required steriods including an injection. Everything seemed OK until 6 weeks  ago when she started getting a blood vessel problem. It seems to break every 7 to 10 days, clears and then breaks again. Always in the same eye and same spot. Since it happens so frequently we went to see  a retina specialist @ the Univ. of Chicago hospital. He a gave her a complete eye exam and said everything was fine, but then 3 days later it reoccurred. She was on aspirin until 2 weeks ago and the only other medicine she takes is 20mg of Zocor. Can you be of any help? Thks

How long it takes for the blood goes away is generally dependent on the amount of blood. A large amount of blood (say half the white of the eye covered in blood to all of the white covered in blood) the longer it takes to go away and can take up to 2 weeks. to clear.

Dr. here's the latest, the last eposide has not gone away. Before it would clear in 3  or 4 days. This isn't getting better. Vision is good, but it's now 6 days. Her blood work was prefect, IDEAS?

No every type of ophthalmologist sees lots of external broken blood vessels (subconjunctival hemorrhage).

We have been to 4 different eye specialist, none of which seem overly concerned, yet both the frequency and severity is on the incease. Is there a specialist that you would reccommend? Thks

I would probably suggest a coagulation panel of blood tests. When the eye clears up have your Eye MD look carefully to see if there are any abnormal vessels on the eye that might need cauterized.

Its unlike that Vit C or grape see extract will help.

The difference between your Dr. friend and my wife is that hers happens every 10 days over the last 6 week. What do you think about vitamin C and grape seed extract to strenghten the blood vessels?

Any number of medications can cause the body to bruise and bleed more easily: heparin, coumadin, steroids, non-steroidal antiinflammatories, asprin, plavix to name a few. If she bleeds or bruises easily then her GP or family doctor should consider doing a 'coagulation study" blood tests to be sure her blood isn't too thin. At other times its just annoying but not serious due to fragile blood vessels like someone that gets nosebleeds easily. A general surgeon neighbor of mine had 6 of these in one year (without any serious cause).
