If you want your best possible distance visual acuity and try and avoid glasses from driving have then try for "plano" (zero) at distance.

If you would like to have some near vision so that you can shave without glasses consider a residual refractive error of -1.25 to 1.50.

I would avoid monovision since you've not worn monovision contacts in the past.

I would avoid multifocal IOL and try for one of the new aspherical monovision IOL like the Tecnis.

Thank you,
Would monovision drive me crazy me?

Probably. If you were really thinking about that you should have had your Eye MD fit you with a contact lens to wear in one eye for reading to see if you could adjust.

If you choose monovision and don't adjust you will probably have to have lasik on the reading eye to correct the reading myopia.

thanks again,
I let the cataract go until my vision was too far gone before getting looked at.
that would be the only cost for me is to have lasik on the reading eye to correct the reading myopia. If it were you would you go for it?
I really do thank you for your time with my questions

Remember what I would do is not what you might want to do. Because I read so much and do so much computer work and I'm use to being able to read without glasses (i'm moderately nearsighted) I would choose to leave one eye about -2.50 or -2.75 and the other eye about -1.25.

Another popular chose for those that would like the distance vision to be clear and don't mind reading glasses is "plano" at distance one eye  -1.25 in the other eye.

You've got me thinking!
It will be nice to have both eyes working again and
since I'm use to wearing readers I'll think I'll go with the latter (plano) and wait to see (no pun) what the other eye does. I guess I can't have everything.
You've been a great help! Thank You very much.
