cataract surgery & myopic macular degeneration

Will cataract surgery increase risk of myopic macular degeneration to worsen?  I'm only 39 years old.

It would increase  your risk of a retinal detachment but would not necessarily increase risk of further myopic degeneration.  When the time is right and you are clinically ready for cataract surgery then your time will have come.  There is no other alternative treatment.  Make sure you get a very thorough retinal exam by retinal specialist preopertively and find an excellent cataract surgeon.  The myopic degeneration progression may be genetically determined to some degree.  I don't think there is much you can do from your part to make it better or worse.  You should of course keep careful follow up visits with retinal specialist to take of any new problems that come along in the future.  Regarding cataract surgery - it is the risk of retinal detachment that I would be concerned about the most.
