cataract surgery after scleral buckle

by sister1942, Nov 01, 2009 06:58AM
What are the risks and usual recovery time if I have cataract surgery on an eye that has a scleral buckle due to treatment for a retinal problem?  I have permanently reduced vision in that eye and wear glasses with prisms that help somewhat.  The doctor tells me the cataract surgery is elective.

It depends on the type and location of the RD. Discuss it with ophthalmologists that can look into your eyes.

Dear sister1942,

Usually, the retina is repaired after the buckle, but the damage to the retina may have caused irreversible visual loss.  If the cataract is interfering with functioning and has reduced your vision further, then removal may be indicated.
