cataract surgery post LASIK

i had subcapsular cataracts. a few years earlier, i had LASIK for near vision in my right eye and for far vision in my left, stronger eye. The right cataract surgery went well. the left eye was not clear like the right, immediately noticeable. i was not given  the lens case afterwards for the left eye and wondered if it was possible the wrong scrip was used. how would i find out short of cutting open the incision and retreiving the lens? the dr. then used a laser he said would sharpen my vision some. instead, it gave me a hazy floater, now permanent, but did not improve my vision. the dr. now says i had too much astigmatism in that eye that the former LASIK did not correct and that what i have is the best they can do. my far vision is about 20/30 if i squint, and for reading glasses i need 2.75 for the left eye and 1.75 for the right. i have no complaints about the right eye. i was 53 years old when the cataract surgery was done. i'm 55 now.

There are many excellent cataract/refractive surgeons in your area.  I think you should get (an)other opinion(s).  For $9.95 you can access Castle-Connolly's data base of "best doctors."  Or you can use the directory at www.aao.org for free.

Dear Jan29,

One of the reasons you may be having difficulty is that your far vision in the distance eye is 20/30 and you have monovision.  There are many possible reasons such as astigmatism for the 20/30 distance vision.  When patients have monovision such as with LASIK, the need for an enhancement in the distance eye is greater.  I would recommend that you speak with your eye doctor about your options for correcting the distance eye such as glasses for nighttime driving, an incision to reduce astigmatism or even laser vision correction.
