childrens bifocals

Why different opinions for bifocals for children? The doctor who prescribed my childs glasses said he should wear bifocals because  his eyes are fine for reading, it is the distance he needs correction.   The optomologist he recently seen for an exam said  the bifocals are not what she would recommend. She said that some doctors think that way but  newer studies over the years now suggest that is not good.
I don't know what to do. Why such controversy? I only want the best for my childs vision. He  only has had bifocals and I am afraid to switch. Also as he ages they don't look that great with a box shape in the corner of each lense. Any suggestions? thank you.

In general, bifocals are not used very often for children.  Only for select cases.  It takes a lot of expertise somtimes in these cases and a pediatric ophthalmologist will be your best bet here.  They are usually very, very helpful.  I was so fortunate to have several good professors in my training and I know they would be able to give you a strong, confident answer about your child's particular situation.  See a pediatric ophthalmologist.
