The short answer would be "no". Recent studies have indicated that the very common "dry" age related macular degeration is more common in obese individuals, in high fat diets and with high blood lipids.
Your macular degeneration, especially if difficult to diagnose, is likely related to genetic factors not all of which are understood.
You should obviously get your lipids down with diet, exercise and drugs as high lipids increases many serious diseases and shortens life.

I, too, have questions about cholesterol rings. I have had very pronounced rings for many years (and high choleserol) This is not my problem, however. I have undiagnosed macular degeneration. The current theory is that I have Stargart's disease and I am awaiting genetic tests through Doheny. I have doubts because I am almost 65 and vision loss started about 7 years ago. I have often wondered if the cholesteol rings may indicate a blockage of blood flow and nutrients to my eyes.

You are at far greater risk of heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke than loss of vision as the cholesteral accumulates around the edge of the cornea (Arcus).
Do see an ophthalmologist Eye MD yearly.
