At some point, for some reason, (including medications, age, stress, loss of vision, or simply for no specific reason) your fusional  capabilities become less and the eyes start to turn out either first sporadically and later for more and more time.  Finally the exotropia can become permanant.  Many of these patients had a strong tendency for eyes to want to turn out for many years but were able to keep it in check unless very tired or medicated or sick.
