diabetic retinopathy w/detachment

by dieselny7, Oct 13, 2009 12:53PM
28 years old both eyes out of no where started to bother me.  Went to specialist and was dx: with diab retinopathy w/retinal detachment.  One eye now after the silicone bubble and avastin is ok about 75% and the other eye also with same just had surgery with a gloomy outcome.  Dr. was unable to successfully remove all the blood and said it was bleeding from behing the retina.  What does that mean exactly?  Is he trying to soften it up or is it true that i will never see out of that eye again ( just shadows and a cloudy silouette)?  Please help me !!! Post surgery is there any hope for me? Will I ever be able to drive again or live a noraml life???  Is there other surgery that I would benefit from ?  Any specialist you would recommend in NYC!!!!

Yours Truely

You say your eyes started to bother you "out of nowhere".  Does that mean that you were unaware that you had diabetes?

Based on your young age and the current severity of the problem (having already required several complex surgeries), the hard truth is that your long term prognosis for retaining anything close to 'normal' vision in either eye is low.

It sounds like your current retina doc is treating you aggressively using modern methods, including Avastin.  I don't know that another retina doc will have more to offer, but if you want a second opinion consider an examination at one of the many excellent university-based eye clinics in NYC.
