effect on night vision

by Louis__0, Feb 13, 1999 12:00AM

I am an amateur astronomer and am considering lasik surgery.  I understand that there is sometimes a problem with night vision....halos etc.  My ophthalmologist is unable to provide me with data on potential effect of this surgery on using optical equiptment at nightime.  I would appreciate any information you may have on the subject.

louis-
to be honest i know of no specific information concerning LASIL/PRK and its effects on the use of optical equipment- i can only give you general info on refractive surgery and it's night vision side effects.  first of all, alot depends on how nearsighted you are. the more nearsighted, or astigmatism you have, the more likely you are to experience halos, rainbows around lights etc-  also it depends on how dilated your pupil gets in dark (scotopic) conditions- finally, i would expect that you would be better off with LASIK given that PRK has a higher incidence of the complaints you are discussing.  my advice is to see a refractive surgeon and have a thorough evaluation, along with a frank discussion regarding all risks and benefits.
key words: LASIK, PRK, scotopic
