eyeglass prescription

just curious - I received 2 eyeglass prescrptions - 1 from an optometrist, and 1 from an ophthamologist - and they are quite different . Is this common?   I need to get one filled, and not sure which one to do.  I already had distance glasses done (using prescription #2) and they seem fine, even perhaps a bit too strong.  Now I need to get  progressives - which will be quite an expense.   Suggestions?    Also, what do the 2nd and 3rd numbers represent?  

1)  OD  - 0.75 - 1.00 x 055    
     OS  -1.00 -  0.75 x 105    add +2.00
2)  OD  -1.75  - 0.75 x 055
     OS  -1.75  -.0.75 x 105    add +2.75
