first pair of glasses

hello all!

i went to the optometrist two weeks ago and was told i am farsighted and need glasses.  my left eye is apparently a bit lazy and my right is over compensating for this.  this is my first pair of glasses so i just have a question as to how often i should wear them?  my doctor told me to wear them all the time until he sees me again in 3 months.  but honestly i can see great near or far.  with my glasses though the computer and reading are a bit more clear, but far away my eyes begin to water.  i have only had them a few days so this could be the reason.

my prescription is as follows:
right eye +1.00 -0.25 178
left eye +4.25 -1.00 025

i am 30 years old and i use the computer and read alot, as i am doing my thesis at the moment.  i don't quite understand what the numbers above mean either, so if anyone could help me with that too, that would be great.

thanks for your quick reply!

i understand that i should speak to an eye doctor regarding this issue, which is what i did.  he said i should wear them ALL the time, but i don't see the benefit in that if i am far sighted.  the lazy eye is not extreme  but is there, not noticeable to myself or any of my friends...he just said that my left eye (obviously by my prescription) is weaker than my right.

my question is, if i wear these glasses for close work and than remove them for everything else, is this putting more of a strain on my eyes?

i should mention that i was getting headaches for awhile and that is how i ended up at the optometrist.  in the end, i honestly could not see myself wearing these for everyday, as my left eye is noticeably larger in my glasses, not the best introduction to a first pair of glasses.  because of this, i would prefer if i could just wear them for reading...and i guess if i had to wear them i would be in need of contacts as these glasses are awful.

sorry for the rant there.
thanks again for your help.

Dear dasee,

I would recommend that you wear the glasses for close work as this will likely remove strain for extended close work.  As there is a large disparity between your eyes and you have a “lazy eye”, I would recommend that you seek the care of an eyeMD to determine the extent of laziness and their recommendation on glasses and their use.
