freckle on sclera

by CW4411, Jun 26, 2008 07:21PM
I have a nevus or freckle on the sclera of my right eye.  It has been there for many years.  However, it is now beginning to interfere and irritate my eye when wearing contact lenses.  It has been observed by an optometrist for a long time and it is not getting any bigger nor is it a tumor.  I would like to have it removed.  My questions are as follows: 1. How is this performed?; 2. What is the recuperation period?; 3. Will the freckles' removal leave a scar?; 4. After the freckle is removed, will this area blend in with the white sclera?; 5. Can you provide a cost range for this procedure?  Many thanks

Usually a nevus is not removed and should not be causing irritation since it should be flat and painless.  I strongly suggest you see an ophthalmologist that is a cornea and external disease specialist to have the lesion looked at.  I can't make any more comment about excision since I don't yet know what the lesion is.  Again, a freckle or nevus is very rarely removed unless there is some concern about malignancy.  This could also be an inflamed pinguecula or pterygium.  See the specialist and he or she should easily be able to answer all your questions after they determine what exactly you have.
