infant with crossed eyes -- new symptom

hello, my son is showing a new symptom.  he is displaying symptoms not unlike those of someone with Duane's syndrome (type I).  The interpalpebral fissure of the adducting eye is narrowed and the abducting eye widened.  it is quite severe at times that there is no mistaking.  He seems to be able to abduct his eye past the midpoint but not totally, or if he does, he definitely can't hold his gaze there.  This would explain the worsened appearance of his pseudo strabismus, the appearance of bulging eyes, and his decreased ability to track moving objects that I have been observing.  While I don't think he has Duane's syndrome (or I sure hope he doesn't), this seems to suggest that there is displacement of his eye from the orbit as well as some malfunctioning of his cranial nerve III and VI, does it not?  I don't want to be too alarmed, but as you can imagine this is very worrisome to me.  do you suggest that he see a neuro ophthalmologist, or a eye/orbit specialist?  what causes displacement of the globe from the orbit? can it reposition itself back to the normal position?  thank you.

Duane-Stilling-Turk Syndrome  (usually just referred to as Duane's Syndrome) can cause the movements you describe.  This problem is taken care of by a pediatric ophthalmologist. If you are not comfortable with the Eye MD you saw before than pick another one.  Oculo-plastic surgeons do not treat this problem.  There is no cure for Duane's Syndrome. The child is observed for amblyopia. Sometimes eye muscle surgery is indiated but normal eye movements are almost never restored.
