lazy eye

lazy eye

I took my son to opthamologist because  I noticed at times he looked cross eyed, his right eye was going a little over to the side to much.  The doctor said he was farsided and had a lazy eye.  He gave him a prescription that read
o.d +2.25 spherical and +1.5 cylindrical axis 90
o.s +2.25 spherical and +1.25 cylindrical axis 90
diagnosis
Amblyopia unspecified, myopia, anisomitropia
From what ive read a lazy eye is treated by using a path over the good eye, I dont understand why he gave him glasses. Are glasses suppose to fix the eye within time.  The doctor wants to see him again in a month but im worried that his eye might get worse. What exactly is going on with my son, I called the doctor but apparently he will not be back at the offfice until tuesday.  I will be able to pick up his glasses in about a week. What are the steps to take to treat this, and how can i help my son at home to overcome this while im waiting for the glasses.  My son is 22 months old. Will this go away and how long will it be until it does?

You are being overly concerned.  This prescription is symmetrical so I would doubt one eye's vision is much better than the other.  So patching or drops may not be indicated at this time.

He most likely has accommodative esotropia and these glasses may be able to straighten his eyes.

You will have to wait until seen again.  This is the first step and additional treatment may be necessary in the future.  You son is very young so he should do very well.

Many patient with similar problems are not treated until after 5 years old making correction of the problem difficult.
