left eye out of focus

Hi Doctor,

It has been few years since I am uneasy with my left eye. No matter what dioptre the optician prescribes and the glasses are made to fit, my left eye remain out of focus. Couple of years ago I was refereed to examination in Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and the results were negative for any deformities or disease. I am 52 years old, an architect who spend hours in the front of computer screen, befriending paper and pen and reading. I wore on and off glasses for longsightedness, mostly around +1,  most of my life. In the last ten years I wear glasses continuously and have astigmatism which is common among the members of my family. My most recent, this month, test has given next dioptres:
R   sph +1   cyl -0.75 axis 180
L    sph +1  cyl -0.75  axis 170
near add +2.00, inter add  +1.5  both eyes
Dominant eye: right 100% (apparently there was no a swap ever)
The test was second one this month because the glasses made to the results of the first one did not help troubles with the left eye. The eye test lasted one and half hour and everything was tried. The color images of my eye's interiors were produced and apparently everything is in perfect condition. The only difference to the previous test is in the increase of the L cyl -0.5 to -0.75. Yet it did not help really, still the troubles focusing remain.  During one of the  checks I realized a phenomena: watching a square with letters on it I have noticed when watched by the right eye only the square appeared brighter and bigger than when watched by the left eye only when it was smaller and a bit gray. I am mentioning this here because of not knowing what significance to assign to it, if any. Also I wore an eye patch briefly in my childhood around age of four, and not longer that for two weeks; I can not remember on which one of my eyes.
I would be greatly thankful if you could respond with your insight to this trouble. Thank you.

Thank you very much for enlightening me about this eye malfunction doctor John.
Yes, some form of eye weaknesses are inherent in my family. My paternal grandmother had her RE a "wondering eye" and weaker, my uncle on that side  too. My father is LE dominant with weaker RE. On my maternal side my grandfather had his LE weaker, and so on. My son 24, can stare from time to time in a way person with weaker eye does, but he doesn't wear  glasses and has good sight, or so we think. Thank you for pointing out the  possibility of occurrence in my grandchildren. We will keep an eye (a good one) on it.

MORE: amblyopia by definition means the eye does not see normal even with glasses. The two most common causes are misalignment of the eyes, which can be very slight (strabismus) and/or unequal refractive error (aneisometrophia)

In all likelihood the LE has amblyopia and cannot see as good as the RE and never will. Likely it was detected in childhood and likely you wore the patch on the RE. Amblyopia is more common in hyperopic individuals.

The problem often runs in families and your grandchildren should be watched closely for the problem.

See if your ophthalmologists agree with this formulation.
