lightstreaks after cataract surgery

by ellen8979, Feb 05, 2008 12:51PM
I am a 63 yr old woman who has been extremely nearsighted until recent cataract surgery with Wills Eye Hosp. surgeon.
I had an iol implanted in left eye last July and 5 days after surgery began seeing long lightstreaks which make driving at night very difficult.
After months of little help, a yag laser treatment was suggested and that seemed to change the lightstreaks into starbursts.
A second yag laser trtmt helped somewhat, reducing the effects by about half.  Now, three weeks ago, I had an iol implanted in the right eye, (at the same time as a trab was done for glaucoma.)   About 2 weeks after this surgery, lightstreaks showed up in the right eye.  Now I see streaks in left eye that extend from "11 o'clock" to "5 o'clock" and streaks in the right eye extending from "1 o'clock" to "7 o'clock".  Vision is good otherwise.  How many yag laser treatments is it safe to have?  Is this known to be helpful with my problem?  What other suggestions?  I have tried anti-reflective glasses and they did not help.
I am active and involved and need to drive at night.

Your problem is very common with multifocal IOLs. If you have one that is likely the cause.

If you had a monofocal IOL then about 30-40% of patients need a yag laser capsulotomy. It is very unusual to need a second one and I have never know anyone that needed three yag caps for a routine eye case.
