macular degeneration without the presence of drusen

I was previously diagnosed with age related macular degeneration in the left eye.  Today I had a new eye exam with a different doctor who said that I do not have age related macular degeneration in either eye because there is NO drusen in either eye.  He said that I have a small hole in the macula that is covered with scar tissue.  He called this macular degeneration, but NOT age related macular degeneration.  I don't seem to find any information on this particular condition.  Is this a rare or fairly common type of macular degeneration?

Macular hole and macular degeneration are NOT the same thing.
There are two types of macular degeneration (for adults): Age-Related macular degeneration and myopic macular degeneration. Use the search feature here to learn more about each of these conditions or Google them.

Many doctor are not good at diagnosis macular degeneration.  I have seen macular pucker, BVO, and anything with changes in the macula called macular degeneration.  See a retinal specialist.  You may have a psuedomacular hole.
