i'm 25 yr old male.i have been very myopic since the age of 2.now for about 23 yrs my eye glass precription has remaineed fairly constant (in between -8D to -10D).But i do have vitreous detachment with floaters and regularRegular insulin flashes.
My question here is what kind of myopia is this?
Degenerative myopia, pathological myopia or simple myopia?
Also is this myopia a birth defect in my case?
Your glasses indicate high myopia. Simple myopia would be RX less than about -4.00 Degenerative myopia depends on what your retina looks like, only an Eye MD that looks inside can tell.
I also have a -8 and -10. I started wearing glasses at 7, but of course was a lot less nearsighted then. While I was wearing hard contacts (1960-69), I could see wonderfully and didn't get any more nearsighted. Since then have been using soft lenses but don't see so good. I have also have collapse of the vitreous sac (started maybe 15 yrs ago) & occasional floaters. I'm 67. Us very nearsighted folks are more susceptible to retinalFluorescein angiography Retinal artery occlusion Retinal detachment Retinal detachment repair Retinal dye injection detachment. I have some latticing near the front of my eye so am very careful even when I sleep, not letting the pillow push on my eyes. I see a retina & macula specialist twiceTwice-a-day a year and he hasn't found any significant changes in 5 years. I never heard of the different myopias you list. As for birth defect, both my parents were hyperopic so I guess it was recessive genes or something. One thing I do like about being so nearsighted is that w/o lenses/glasses I basically have microscopic vision & can read cruelly tiny print. I'm getting cataracts now & was going to dive right into the Crystalens by Basuch & Lomb but somewhere in these fora I saw horror posts about them. Need to find that discussion again.
degenerative/pathological/progressive myopia are all terms describing the same thing.
Dr. Hagan is right, you'll have to ask your dr. for the diagnosis.
