ocular herpes

I have been experience what I believe to be genital herpes symptoms for a few months now.  I have examined the sores but always wash my hands after.  I also typically make sure to touch other things before touching my eye after washing.

I just went to get tested for genital herpes and am waiting for the results.  This week, I've noticed some burning/dryness in both of my eyes, and then some red/bloodshot looks that are very similar in both eyes, starting near the tear duct/eye muscle and working along near the cornea.  I'm extremely concerned that I've given myself ocular herpes through auto-inoculation, either through unknowingly touching the sores and scratching my eye, not washing hands well enough, towel after showering, etc.

My questions are:
1. How likely is it that auto-inoculation occurs to the eye after washing hands.  Is it possible with towels?
2. Should I immediately go see an eye doctor while I have symptoms or wait to find out if I even have herpes first?  Is ocular herpes serious enough that I should just go get seen?

Thanks!

1. Not common. Towels are an usual "vector" (thing that carries infection)
2. If you eye is uncomfortable I would see an ophthalmogist (go to www.aao.org). Most herpes simplex type 1 eye infections are not serious if properly treated and steroids are not used on the eye.

Thanks for the quick reply, Dr. Hagan.  I have two follow up questions if you don't mind.
First, I regularly see an optometrist.  Can they see me?
Second, can I wait for my genital swab test results before seeing a eye doctor?  My symptoms aren't extreme.  I am trying to stay calm about this potential, but also want to take care of my health.

1. Optoms do not have either the training or the experience of a Eye MD physician. Some would see the HSV some would not. Always better with an Eye MD physician. Find one near you at www.aao.org

Thanks.  I can't get into my eye MD until next Thursday as I'll be on vacation and they're booked.  Is it ok to wait that long if this is indeed an outbreak or do I need to call their emergency line?  I'm only in slight discomfort now and have clear sight.

I cannot tell you for sure but generally if vision is clear and you are not in pain waiting is okay.
