ocular histoplasmosis

Posted by Kerin on June 15, 1999 at 12:21:06
I was diagnosed with ocular histoplasmosis in June of 1996. I have undergone membrane stripping in the right eye, three months later a detached retina in the right eye, 3 months later, cataract surgery in right eye, 3 months later again, the right eye began to slowly shut down, ie, sight problems.  Tested for MS etc, proved negative.  Possibly optic nerve problems but don't have classic symptoms so probably not.  Currently, vision is deteriotated more and at a faster rate, ie, blurrier, grey, and black area on outer right eye.  Left eye center vision is gone from histoplasmosis, there has been no surgery on left eye.  Very concerned in losing more vision, doctors in Charlotte, have no ideas for me, might you?  Thank you in advance for your help, it is greatly appreciated.  Kerin

It is unfortunate that you have had such problems with the one eye.  Without examining you it is difficult to say the cause.  I would be concerned about blood flow problems to the eye just related to the numbers of surgeries you have undergone in that eye.  In general, the more operations on an eye the worse the visual prognosis.  You may want to consider a neuro-ophthalmologist evaluation.  The more important issue is that they keep a close eye on your better eye.  You can also monitor your  vision with periodic amsler grid testing.
