ongoing grey blobs

ongoing grey blobs

i have an eight-year history of a strange visual disturbance that i have no answer for, despite seeing numerous opthalmologists.

i have probably had 20 or more "episodes", which are mostly identical in duration and presentation.

first, i notice a bright spot in one of my eyes, like i've just looked at a flashbulb. over the next few weeks it will fade to a grey blob that is most noticeable with one eye closed or looking at something with contrast (eg vertical blinds). this then fades to a samll scotoma i can see on a an amlser grid but which can't be detected on a humphrey of goldmann field test.

i have been told my retinas look fine and it is not macular degeneration (I am 39). my most recent dilated exam was a year ago by a retinologist, and the year before that i had a full work-up at the Sydney Eye Hospital, including some kind of eyeball scan.

nothing to explain my symptoms has even been found.

could it be psychogenic? a response to stress?

the best diagnosis i have had is to "adopt a wait and see approach"...

but after eight years a and numerous recurrences, that is proving frustrating.

if i knew it was just some kind of "glitch" and that i wasn't going blind, i cold get on with my life and ignore it. but as it stands, i am paranoid this is degenerative and one day i will awaken with a big grey blob and not be able to read ...
