optic neuropathy

I had an OCT exam performed at a neuro-ophthomologist office.  I have been in the process of testing to rule out MS-all of the results have been inconclusive.

Upon exam in the office the MD reported some pallor of the right optic nerve.

My OCT results are: cup to disc ratio 0.1 x 0.1 in each eye.  The peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness is decreased inferiorly in the right eye and inferiorly, superiorly, and nasally in the left.  Average thickness is 88.8 microns on the right and 74.8 on the left.  The macular thickness is decreased bilaterally at 3 and 6 mm in the right eye inferiorly and temporally and at 6 mm superiorly.  In the left eye there is decresed  thickness at 3 mm and 6 mm temporally and inferiorly and 6 mm superiorly.  Therefore, the study is consistant with bilateral optic neuropathies, left more then right, w/ secondary macular changes.  Clinical correlation is required.

Does this sound like it could be MS or another neurological condition.  What  in eachother causes could there be?  Is this serious-could I need some type of treatment?

You have a potential serious problem. The OCT does not rule out MS but it cannot make the DX. You will have to discuss this in depth with your Eye MD.  MS is often very difficult to DX sometimes it takes years of observation to be certain. You are in good hands.

I do have a f/u appt w/ the neuro-ophtho doc.  I was trying to get some input prior to the appt since it's a few weeks away.  My neuro doc acted like it was serious when we spoke over the phone and gave me the impression he didn't think it was MS related, so now I feel like what else can it be?  Thanks for your response-I'll wait to see if Dr. Hagan has any input.
Thanks again,
Dannig
