prosthetic contact lens wear time

Hi there,

A recent eye injury left me with a fixed dilated pupil. I will be needing a prosthetic contact lens with a coloured iris and a clear pupil. I understand it will be made of the same material as soft contact lenses but with coloured layers added. Can these be worn as long as a standard soft contact lens? I really need it for about 12 hours a day.

Thanks,
John.

I don't see a problem with that.  Just take it out while you sleep.

To MJK MD,
What is your opinion on contact lens that reduce the glare and make the pupils look even for patients who have permanently dilated pupils?

It might help, it might not.  You just have to give it a try.  One problem is that the very good lenses designed specifically just for this purpose are fairly expensive and there is usually no ability to take it back.  So if you don't like it you would be out $150 or so.  There is a surgeon in Cincinnatti  named Robert Osher, MD who specializes in these type of cases and is able to do surgery or even prescribe cosmetic contact lenses.
