pupil dilation test

my friend went to an eye expert to get an eye check up cos her number is -7 at the age of 18 and is increasing and she is also having a double vision from one of the eyes accompanied with severe headaches many a times.... but there the drops used to dilate the pupil for further testing didn't work... the doctor used the drops 4-5 times after every 15 mins but still wasn't able to get a successful pupil dilation... although he did carry on further test and said there is a hole in the retina and prescribed a laser operation.....
i need your help on both the things:
first what can be the reasons for an unsuccessful pupil dilation ??
secondly all the info possible about the hole in retina and its cure...
i am really scared....

Some patient do not dilate well.  They have usually had eye surgery or had been on drops for glaucoma.  

Use the search function regards treatment of retinal holes.  In my opinion, in general only acute horsehoe tears should be treated.

Thank you Dr. O for replying.... in this case the patient have had no surgery and she is not taking any drops... still the pupil did not dilate well.... anything really serious about that ??
