question on retina detachment

by Heather888, Jul 05, 2009 10:13PM
I often read that after a retinal detachment treatment that vision does 'not return to normal" What does this mean? That it will not be able to be corrected OR it will be a stronger RX when through?

"normal" is just whatever his best corrected visual acuity was prior to the retinal detachment.

Your research is WRONG. Most people who experience retinal detachments will have their vision return to normal after treatment. There are some people who may experience slight peripheral vision loss. If the macula was effected than the vision will probably not return to normal and the patient may experience distorted vision. However, most people experience no discernible difference between pre-RD and post-RD final visual acuity with best correction.

Depending on what type of treatment was received will determine if you need a change in RX afterwords.

Thanks I feel a lot better:) I just feel for anyone who has had this happen to them. My husband is a minus 21 before this so I was affraid for him if it was worse than that,,We joke that we can't believe that we are praying that he would have his poor old vision back. It is hard not knowing because he is in law enforcement and he can't work. He  works out 2 hours a day and he can't do that..He is depressed and Cranky...LOL He will not be able to work again in a job HE LOVES if his vision is not correctable with contcts...It really is scary reading the stories on the internet and not knowing. We go to Dr. this week and I hope to get more answers answered....Thanks Again
