retininal detachment risk following IOL

retininal detachment risk following IOL

What is the actual risk factor of retinal detachment for a myopic (-7 & -12), healthy 70 year old female?  I am assuming that my eyes could still be corrected with a change of glasses, although it wouldn't be nearly as satisfactory as lens implants.  I am an artist, so a loss of vision in either eye to any degree would be devastating.  One study with which I am familiar quoted a 7% risk of detachment.  That seems quite high when it concerns my vision.
Thank you.

Please read what Dr Hagan wrote in his journal:

I think your number is too high. Maybe you found an old study with data before 1980 using the old method of cataract extraction.

There is disagreement of the studies. One study (which I cannot quote by volume and date) found no increase in the risk after cataract surgery. I would say a meta analysis pooling would probably put the risk as between 3-7%.

You have been living your whole life at increased risk of a number of problems (retinal tears, holes, bleeding, myopic macular degeneration) due to your high myopia and todate they haven't happened. 93 to 7 odds are pretty good.
