scleral buckle intrusion?

About 2/12 years ago I had a retinal detachment and then surgery using a scleral buckle to re-attach my retina.  About a week ago I noticed my eye was getting blood-shot, red and sore.  When I looked at my eye ball under the lower eye lid I found a number of bumps protruding from my eye.  I have been to the eye hospital and have been told this is my scleral buckle and stitches rubbing through my eye!  

I now need to wait for a referral to see a consultant but in the mean time I feel concerned, anxious and uninformed about this condition.  Can anyone provide me with similar anecdotes, links to articles or simply explain this to me please?

I am only 24, so very young for the original detachment especially as I was neither diabetic or myopic before hand.  The doctor I saw said that as I am young my immune system is strong and therefore better at rejecting foreign bodies.  I had no idea this could happen.  :(

You may be having an extruding implant.  The treatment is antibiotic drops and possible removal of the implant (easy to do and can be done in the office).

This occurs in a small percentages of retinal detachment repairs.  Early removal of the scleral buckle can cause redetachment of the retina.  However, the chance of this after one year is very small.
