My grandmother has tried over the past two years to get an answer to her problem. She is seeing a shiny black ring ("like a Christmas wreath") when she wakes up in the morning. Any idea what this could be caused by?
A piece of protein floating in the vitreous when she sleeps it drops from the bottom of the eye to the middle of the back of the eye due to the change in position to the sleeping flat postion. The black ring is "Weiss ligament" the cirular attachment of the vitreous around the optic nerve. It is pulled into the vitreous during a vitreous detachment.
