side effect of cataract surgery

After having cataract surgery last week my husband (age 74) was diagnosed today with a macular hole in the same eye.  Could this have somehow been the result of the cataract surgery?  There was no evidence of this prior to the surgery.

Dear Maffuc,

It is difficult to determine from your husband’s history whether the macular hole was present before the surgery or not.  I would recommend that you speak with your husband’s eyeMD and seek the care of a retinal specialist.
