This could be a posterior vitreous detachment, which is a normal separation of the vitreous gel from the retina. However, it could also be blood in the vitreous from a retinal tear caused by the vitreous pulling on the retina and tearing it. This happens about 10% of the time with a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). She needs to see an ophthalmologist for a complete dilated exam of the retina, as soon as possible.
