strange distortions

strange distortions

After recent phakic implant surgery, I have noticed visual distortions with left eye - namely, straight lines such a doorway will show an outpouching if I'm focused on a point just right of it.  On the Amsler Grid, I see out the outpouching only on the left outer line of the graph with the left eye.  The right eye also shows similar but less distinct outpouching on the outler line of the graph with right eye but in different location.  I also have more severe photopic phenomenon with left eye.  Additionally, pictures, doorways, etc. sometimes appear either crooked or curved inward at certain angles or viewing points, using both eyes.  I have severe myopia with -16 and -17 and the phakic lens has a small optical size.  MD Doctor's note says, "some retinal pigment epithelial changes suggestive of early mild myopic macular degeneration."  My questions are these: 1) could distortions possibly be explained by high correction and small optic size of lens or more likely due to macular problems?  2) should I seek opinion of retinal specialist? (my surgeon did not indicate that this seemed necessary).

Thank you, kindly

These symptoms are very suggestive of macular degeneration or myopic degeneration.  I would see a retinal specialist right away!  We just can't assume these things are from the implant.

What can a retinal specialist do for me that my treating opthamologist cannot?  Are there other tests that are more definitive for a myopic macular degeneration diagnosis (other than dilated exam)?  If I do have myopic macular degeneration, it is my understanding that there is no treatment for it, so why the urgency?  I am now very scared.  It is weird to me that these distortions were not noticeable to me prior to the implant surgery.

Thank you again, kindly

Retinal specialist have more options to evaluate your situaton (optical cogerent tomography, for example or fluorecent angiography) and more expirience in retinal problems. Some situations in macular degeneration are curable.
It is no highly urgent condition.
In summary: more specific specialict - more proper diagnosis  - more better results
